Clever home heating – sneak peek

Recently, we started operating our own self-made home heating automation solution. For now, just a sneak peek – commented photos. Technical details and challenges I had to overcome soon. Stay tuned.

Prototype of heating computer installed on bread board. Powered by ordinary 5V mobile charger.
The heating computer brain is NodeMCU board with ESP8266 microchip and WiFi. Logics controlling the heating based on various types of temperatures runs as a periodic program on this tiny computer.
We are using two water-proof temperatures DS18B20 sensors.
The heating computer as “black box”. Zero waste strategy, using cardboard box from some other component.
One of the temperature sensors is connected to metallic hot water output pipe. We used heat conducting paste (that is used to paste CPUs) for better heat conductance.
The heating computer is turning on/off boiler through smart plug. The on/off logic is taking into account current temperature of the water in the boiler, temperature of the building, inside and outside air temperature.

Detail on the “black box”. Gas leak detector on the right. One temperature sensor is on the hot water pipe and the other one is sealed inside the wall.
Indoor particulate matter sensor which also provides room temperature data. Together with his big outdoor brother, these provide inside and outside temperatures through REST APIs of Luftdaten service.

Cockpit view dashboard in Wolkabout.com web app. Temperature of the water coming from the boiler, temperature of the building in the wall, outside and living room temperatures are used by the heating computer. These data are also streamed to Wolkabout service wia MQTT protocol and shown in this nice dashboard and in the mobile app.
